The place is Philly. The time is 1959. Billie Holiday, is salvaging what she can of her career, after a series of hardships, and a stint in jail.

Against the law, and against all odds, she returns to her friends club to do a performance, but throughout it, she begins to rapidly deteriorate as she sings the songs that made her famous, and looks back on her life.
